01 — Overview

Switzerland's wilder,
more affordable neighbour

Austria delivers Alpine grandeur at a significantly lower cost than Switzerland. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of the finest drives in Europe, the Tirol valleys are extraordinary in any season, the Carinthian lakes warm enough to swim in from June to September, and Salzburg and Vienna are two of the most beautiful cities on the continent.

Austria is deeply accommodating to vanlifers: a well-developed campsite network, reasonable prices by Alpine standards, and roads that seem designed specifically for scenic driving. The country punches far above its weight for a nation of nine million people.

Six places worth the detour

Austria is compact and varied — from Alpine rock to Baroque cities and warm swimming lakes.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road
01

Grossglockner Road

The 48 km Grossglockner High Alpine Road is Austria's greatest drive — 36 hairpin bends climbing to 2,571 m, the Franz-Josefs-Höhe glacier viewpoint, and panoramic views over the highest peak in Austria. Open May to November. Separate toll required.

Tirol

The Ötztal, Zillertal, Stubaital, and Lech valleys — some of the finest Alpine terrain in Europe. Innsbruck is a world-class city with mountains directly above it. The Hahntennjoch pass between the Lechtal and Inn valley is one of Austria's most dramatic drives.

Salzburg

Mozart's birthplace and one of the finest Baroque cities in Europe. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fortress above is superbly preserved, and the Salzkammergut lake district begins just 30 km to the east. A mandatory stop on any Austrian route.

Carinthia & the Lakes

Austria's warmest region — the Wörthersee, Weissensee, and Millstätter See warm to 26°C in summer. Surrounded by mountains, these lakes are Austria's answer to Italy's lake district, at significantly lower prices and with far fewer crowds.

Salzkammergut

A UNESCO World Heritage region of 76 lakes in the mountains east of Salzburg. Hallstatt — possibly the most photographed village in the world — sits above a salt-mine that has been worked for 7,000 years. St Wolfgang and Bad Ischl are equally beautiful and far less crowded.

Vorarlberg & Bregenzerwald

Austria's westernmost province borders Switzerland and Liechtenstein — and shares their level of mountain grandeur at lower prices. The Bregenzerwald valley's cheese road, the Arlberg ski area, and Lake Constance at the northern edge make it one of the country's most underrated corners.

Two ways to drive it

Austria rewards those who take the scenic roads and avoid the tunnels. These routes do exactly that.

8 days ~900 km

The Alpine Grand Tour

Tirol valleys, the Grossglockner, Salzburg, and the Salzkammergut — Austria's greatest hits in a single loop.

  1. Day 1–2
Innsbruck & the Ötztal Base in Innsbruck for the old town and the Nordkette cable car above the city. Drive up the Ötztal the next day — Austria's highest valley — to the glacier at the top. Spectacular and easily accessible by van.
  2. Day 3–4
Grossglockner & Zell am See The drive of the trip: 36 hairpins to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe glacier viewpoint. Descend to Zell am See — the lake is extraordinarily beautiful. Camp beside the water and swim on the second morning.
  3. Day 5–6
Salzburg Two nights near Salzburg — park at the Camping Kasern or similar and take the bus in. Hohensalzburg fortress, the Mozart birthplace, the Mirabellgarten, and at least one Café Tomaselli Melange in the old town.
  4. Day 7–8
Salzkammergut — Hallstatt & Attersee Drive east into the Salzkammergut. Arrive at Hallstatt before 8am to have it to yourself for an hour. Move on to the Attersee or Traunsee for the second night — bigger, quieter, and equally beautiful.
6 days ~700 km

Carinthia & the South

Austria's warmest corner — lakes, the Nockalm Road, and the Drava valley through to Slovenia.

  1. Day 1–2
Weissensee & Millstätter See Two of Carinthia's most beautiful lakes. The Weissensee is Austria's cleanest — no motor boats, clear to 10 m depth, perfect for paddling. Camp at the water's edge and spend a full day doing nothing in particular.
  2. Day 3
Nockalm Road The 35 km Nockalm panoramic mountain road climbs to 2,042 m through the Nockberge national park. Toll required. Drive slowly — the views across southern Austria and into Slovenia are extraordinary on a clear day.
  3. Day 4–5
Wörthersee & Klagenfurt Austria's most famous lake — 27°C water in summer, a promenade of elegant villas, and the city of Klagenfurt nearby for an evening. Camp on the north shore for sunrise views over the water.
  4. Day 6
Villach & the Drava Valley Villach is Austria's southernmost major city — relaxed, friendly, and underrated. The Drava (Drau) river valley east of Villach is a beautiful drive through vine-terraced hills toward Slovenia. Cross the border if time allows.
