01. Overview

Small kingdom,
endless coastline

Denmark rarely tops the vanlife wish list, which is exactly why it rewards those who show up. It is a low, flat, endlessly coastal country: more than 400 islands, chalk cliffs, wide dune beaches on the Jutland west coast, and a capital built for slow travel by bike.

Everything here sits close together and is easy to reach. Distances are short, roads are smooth, and the country runs on a level of order and trust that makes van travel simple. Denmark is also one of the most EV friendly countries on the continent, with strong charging coverage from the coast to the countryside.

02. Must-see

Six places worth the detour

Denmark is smaller than most people expect. Here's where to point your van.

Copenhagen harbour and cycling streets
01

Copenhagen

Denmark's compact, endlessly cyclable capital. Colourful Nyhavn harbour, the Tivoli Gardens, world class New Nordic food, and some of the best urban cycling infrastructure anywhere. Several official motorhome stops sit a short ride from the centre.

Skagen dunes where two seas meet
02

Skagen

The northernmost tip of Jutland, where the North Sea and the Kattegat visibly collide at Grenen. Sweeping sand dunes, the half buried Tilsandede Kirke, and a quality of light that has drawn painters here for well over a century.

Legoland theme park in Billund
03

Legoland, Billund

The original Legoland, built from tens of millions of bricks in the town where the toy itself was invented. A guaranteed hit for family vans, with several motorhome friendly campsites nearby.

Møns Klint white chalk cliffs
04

Møns Klint

Denmark's most dramatic coastline: brilliant white chalk cliffs rising up to 128 metres above the Baltic, beech forest along the top, and a fossil strewn beach below. The GeoCenter at the top explains how it all formed.

Jutland west coast dunes and beach
05

Jutland West Coast

A near unbroken run of wide sand beaches and rolling dunes from the German border to Skagen. Wind, surf, and thatched cottage villages like Henne Strand and Blåvand, with seal spotting further south along the Wadden Sea.

Bornholm

A Baltic island reached by ferry, with a character closer to Sweden than the rest of Denmark. Round medieval churches built for defence, smokehouses selling warm smoked herring straight off the boat, and a rocky coastline unlike anywhere else in the country.

What you need to know

Denmark is simple to travel, but a few local rules make a real difference to the trip.

04. Route ideas

Two ways to drive it

Pick one for a week, or combine them into a longer loop across the country.

7 days ~420 km

The Jutland West Coast

Dunes, surf towns and Denmark's most dramatic light, running from the Wadden Sea up to the country's northern tip.

  1. Day 1 to 2
Ribe & the Wadden Sea Denmark's oldest town, all cobbled lanes and half timbered houses, sits on the edge of the Wadden Sea National Park. Take a guided seal safari or an oyster walk out onto the mudflats at low tide before heading north.
  2. Day 3 to 4
Blåvand to Thorsminde A long, wild stretch of dune coast dotted with surf towns. Stop at Henne Strand and Blåvand for wide sand beaches, then follow the coast road north through Nymindegab to Thorsminde, where the Nissum Fjord meets the North Sea.
  3. Day 5 to 6
Thy National Park & Klitmøller Denmark's first national park is a rugged mix of dune plantation, heath and lake. Klitmøller, nicknamed Cold Hawaii, is one of the best windsurfing and surfing spots in Northern Europe, even if you are only there to watch.
  4. Day 7
Skagen The northernmost tip of Denmark, where the North Sea and the Kattegat visibly meet at Grenen. Walk out to the point, visit the half buried Tilsandede Kirke, and spend an evening among the old Skagen painters' haunts before turning back south.
5 days ~230 km + ferry

Zealand, Møn & Bornholm

Copenhagen's canals, dramatic chalk cliffs and a Baltic island with a character all its own.

  1. Day 1
Copenhagen Base at an official motorhome stop on the edge of the city and cycle in. Nyhavn's coloured harbour houses, Tivoli Gardens, and a New Nordic food market are enough for a full day on their own.
  2. Day 2
Møns Klint Drive south to Møn for Denmark's most striking coastline: white chalk cliffs rising up to 128 metres above the Baltic. Walk down to the fossil strewn beach, then take in the view from the GeoCenter above.
  3. Day 3 to 4
Bornholm Take the overnight ferry from Køge to Rønne. Spend two days exploring round medieval churches built for defence, smokehouses selling herring straight off the boat, and the ruined clifftop fortress of Hammershus.
  4. Day 5
Stevns Klint & home Catch the return ferry to Køge and stop at Stevns Klint, a UNESCO listed fossil cliff, on the way back into Copenhagen.
