North Sea dunes, fairytale islands and one of Europe's best EV charging networks
Denmark rarely tops the vanlife wish list, which is exactly why it rewards those who show up. It is a low, flat, endlessly coastal country: more than 400 islands, chalk cliffs, wide dune beaches on the Jutland west coast, and a capital built for slow travel by bike.
Everything here sits close together and is easy to reach. Distances are short, roads are smooth, and the country runs on a level of order and trust that makes van travel simple. Denmark is also one of the most EV friendly countries on the continent, with strong charging coverage from the coast to the countryside.
Denmark is smaller than most people expect. Here's where to point your van.
Denmark's compact, endlessly cyclable capital. Colourful Nyhavn harbour, the Tivoli Gardens, world class New Nordic food, and some of the best urban cycling infrastructure anywhere. Several official motorhome stops sit a short ride from the centre.
The northernmost tip of Jutland, where the North Sea and the Kattegat visibly collide at Grenen. Sweeping sand dunes, the half buried Tilsandede Kirke, and a quality of light that has drawn painters here for well over a century.
The original Legoland, built from tens of millions of bricks in the town where the toy itself was invented. A guaranteed hit for family vans, with several motorhome friendly campsites nearby.

A near unbroken run of wide sand beaches and rolling dunes from the German border to Skagen. Wind, surf, and thatched cottage villages like Henne Strand and Blåvand, with seal spotting further south along the Wadden Sea.
A Baltic island reached by ferry, with a character closer to Sweden than the rest of Denmark. Round medieval churches built for defence, smokehouses selling warm smoked herring straight off the boat, and a rocky coastline unlike anywhere else in the country.
Denmark is simple to travel, but a few local rules make a real difference to the trip.
Denmark's outdoor access law, the Friluftsloven (Nature Access Act), allows one night of camping on foot in forests and on open coastal land, but it is written with hikers and cyclists in mind rather than vehicles. Motorhomes generally cannot pull into forest car parks or official shelter sites to stay overnight.
For a legal night's sleep in your vehicle, a rasteplads (roadside layby) is usually the safest option. Sleeping inside your camper at a rasteplads for one night is tolerated, as long as you do not set up an awning, table or chairs outside.
Denmark also has a dense network of over a thousand simple wooden shelters aimed mainly at hikers and cyclists, bookable through udinaturen.dk or the Naturstyrelsen (Danish Nature Agency) booking system. Most are not reachable by motorhome, but worth knowing about if you are travelling with bikes on board.
The Great Belt Bridge links the islands of Funen and Zealand and is the one toll almost every Denmark road trip will cross. A standard car pays roughly 200 to 235 DKK for a one way crossing depending on payment method, with a lower rate for BroBizz or automatic number plate billing. Motorhomes over 6 metres and 3.5 tonnes are charged at a higher rate, though a discounted motorhome agreement is available if you register in advance.
The Øresund Bridge connects Copenhagen to Malmö in Sweden. A one way crossing for a standard car costs several hundred DKK at the counter, but a subscription such as ØresundGO brings the price down substantially per trip and is worth it if you plan to cross more than once.
Both bridges accept card or cash at the booth, can be booked online in advance for a discount, or paid automatically with a BroBizz tag if you already have one from elsewhere in Scandinavia. There is no vignette system in Denmark and no tolled roads outside these two crossings.
Denmark has one of the highest rates of EV adoption in Scandinavia, and the charging network reflects it. Coverage is strong along motorways and in and around every major town, though it thins out on the smaller islands, so plan ahead if you are heading to Bornholm.
Denmark, alongside the Netherlands, has some of the best cycling infrastructure in the world. Cycle lanes run alongside almost every road, from Copenhagen's grand boulevards to quiet rural routes, and cyclists are a constant presence.
Denmark consistently ranks among the most expensive countries in Europe for everyday costs. Restaurant meals, alcohol and fuel all sit well above the European average, and peak summer campsite prices can rival Norway or Switzerland.
Bornholm sits out in the Baltic Sea and is best reached by ferry. The shortest and most frequent crossing runs from Ystad in Sweden to Rønne, taking around 80 minutes with many daily departures. A direct overnight option also runs from Køge, near Copenhagen, taking around five and a half hours. Both routes carry motorhomes and caravans.
Fjord Line and Color Line connect Hirtshals in northern Jutland with Kristiansand, Larvik and Bergen in Norway. These direct crossings are a genuine time saver compared with driving all the way around through Sweden.
Beyond the Øresund Bridge, Stena Line runs a direct ferry between Frederikshavn in northern Jutland and Gothenburg, a useful alternative if you are already up in Jutland and want to skip the bridge toll and the drive back through Copenhagen.
